Herta Muller Wins Nobel Prize In Literature 2009
Who will be this year's laureate for literature? The announcement will come today but for those of your who cannot wait to read about it later on the web, you can watch the Nobel Prize announcement online through live stream from the Nobel Prize website HERE as the name(s) of the year’s Nobel Laureates in Literature are announced during a press conference at the Swedish Academy in Stockholm.
Other prizes in the different fields have already been given out. The awards for Physics, Chemistry and Medicine have been announced the past
three days. And the Nobel Prize in Literature 2009 is due today. Who will win it? The Nobel Prize in Literature is given annually to an author from any country who has, in the words from the will of Alfred Nobel, produced "in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction". The "work" in this case refers to an author's work as a whole, though individual works are sometimes also cited.
The trend this year seems to be multiple awardees with the past Nobel Prizes shared between three individuals. The 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics went to Charles K. Kao, Willard S. Boyle and George E. Smith, the fathers of fiber optics and digital imaging. The Prize for Chemistry went to Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Thomas A. Steitz, and Ada E. Yonath for "studies of the function and structure of the ribosome". And for Medicine, Elizabeth H. Blackburn, Carol W. Greider and Jack W. Szostak for the "discovery of how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase". If this trending holds, we may see a trio of laureates for the Nobel Prize in Literature as well.
